Vaughn Williams – Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis
Beethoven – Symphony No. 6

Beethoven titled his Sixth Symphony the “Pastoral Symphony, or Recollections of Country Life” – one of only two symphonies that he titled. This majestic work reflects Beethoven’s love of nature in its many moods – from the bucolic opening movement to the exquisite melodies of the “Scene at the Brook” to the “thunderstorm” in the fourth movement and the joyful finale, it is a colorful, pleasing and quietly powerful work. Also on the program: Ralph Vaughn Williams’ awe-inspiring Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.
