Schrenk Student Photography Institute

The Schrenk Student Photography Institute is a program for high school students consisting of four weekend workshops during the academic year and a two-week seminar in June of each year. Each year, a class of up to 20 students will be selected to participate in the Photography Institute. The program will give the students broad experiences in various areas of photography: the camera, seeing, lighting, composing, digital technology and portfolio preparation. The program is designed to assist students in vocational decisions, understanding visual communications and preparations for college-level image-making. The curriculum will emphasize equally the craft and aesthetic of visual problem-solving. The first two years will concentrate on technical and formal excellence; the third year will concentrate on students’ individual area(s) of interest while building a college-level and exhibition portfolio.

The primary instructor for the Photography Institute is J. Tomas Lopez, M.F.A., Professor of Photography, and Director of Electronic Media at the University of Miami.

Application Information

Students in grades 9-12 are encouraged to apply. Students attending any Collier County public, private, or home school are eligible. Application is due August 31, 2012. Please return application and six examples of work (printed photos or CD with images) to:

All classes are held in the Toni Stabile Building (the five-story building directly behind the Philharmonic Center concert hall.)

Payment Information

Students pay supply fee only – $200. Tuition for the Photography Institute is $250 per year and is generously underwritten by the Schrenk Family Foundation. Supply fee must be paid by September 7, 2012. Scholarships for supply fee are available based on need.
